Trains the student to prepare thin sections of human tissue for microscopic examination.

The program is intended to prepare students for entry level employment as histology technicians in clinical, veterinary, and research laboratories. It also serves as a pathway for career advancement and specialized areas in the histotechnology profession.

The program stresses practical application and the development of job skills as well as histotechnology theory.

The program is designed to enhance the ability of students to reason, understand, and apply correct principles of histotechnology by teaching analytical and critical thinking skills. This course prepares students to sit for the National Board Certification Exam.

The program will be available to new entrants into the field as well as incumbent workers who have not had the advantage of receiving a strong theoretical foundation. Update Letter from Clover Park Histology Technician Program

Hello Histology friends,

The Histology Technician program at Clover Park Technical College is off to new start this year. We are currently in the first quarter of our 2008-2009 academic year and are pleased that we are training six new students to enter the histology field. The students are very driven and eager to succeed in the field and are displaying great skills in fixation, processing, microtomy, embedding and tissue identification.

They are looking forward to moving on to many chapters of special staining, frozen sectioning, and IHC in the quarters to come as well as continuing to increase their previously learned skills.

The students will enter their internships in the summer quarter and will begin looking for employment at the end of August. Please welcome them into the histology world.

The 2007-2008 students are gainfully employed in various laboratories in Washington, Idaho and Arizona. Several of them have already taken the ASCP certification exam. All of those who have taken the exam have passed! And we are proud to be maintaining a 100% passing rate to date. Congratulations to those students and we are wishing the best for those who will be taking the exam in the near future.

As the Instructor of the program, I encourage students to be active in the histology societies, both nationally and locally. The current students are in the process of completing a taxing assignment of writing a paper on Volunteering in those societies. As part of this assignment they are locating volunteers to interview. So, if you are a volunteer don’t be surprised to hear from them!
Overall, the CPTC Histology students both present and past are experiencing great rewards and the college, the students’ employers and myself are very proud of them.

Sincerely,
Rebecca Haggerty
